More than 6,000 Kilos of Imported Meatballs Seized at Thai Border

BANTEAY MEANCHEY: Officials seized more than 6,000 kilograms of meatballs from a truck carrying imported meat from Thailand on December 3.

The Banteay Meanchey Department of Animal Health and Production collaborated with the Thmar Puok Military Command to stop a white SsangYong 15-passenger car carrying 6,640 kg of animal-derived products (mixed meatballs) entering from Thailand through the Thmor Puok District corridor in Banteay Meanchey Province.

Outside of Kasin Village, the driver failed to produce a permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to verify that the meat was regulated. The investigation then seized the vehicle and the meat which were stored at the Banteay Meanchey Department of Agriculture while legal action ensues.

Last week, the President of the Cambodian Livestock Association led a conference to discuss the dangers of unregulated meat imports. Since the workshop, authorities have been on the lookout for meat imports being made without permits. On December 4, the Phnom Penh Department of Animal Health and Production seized nearly 400,000 kilos of frozen meat that did not have proper documentation.
